Booking choice: The cruise-port beach day and turtle swim, 6 hours. Book this Tour details
In Bridgetown a cruise starts nearly as often as it stops. Last winter the port projected 438 calls, and 205 of them were homeport calls, where one set of passengers flies home and the next flies in to board. On its busiest day, in January 2026, just over 12,000 cruise visitors came ashore. That is a lot of people for a port about a mile from a small capital.
For anyone planning a boat trip, the season changes two things. On port days the harbour, the taxi rank and the boats around Carlisle Bay are at their fullest. For people starting or ending a cruise here, a night on the island before or after opens up the trips that do not fit a port day, from the sunset sails to the private catamaran. Below: what is new for 2026-27, then the practical part, with the cruise-port beach day as the default for a short call.
The quick answer
The Barbados cruise season runs mainly from November to April. For 2026-27 the port has a new cargo berth, Berth 6, that frees the older berths for cruise ships; Princess Cruises starts homeporting Crown Princess in Bridgetown from January 2027; and some 19 lines already base ships here. On a port day, pick a trip built around the ship: the beach-day shore excursion sets its return times by the afternoon.
When does the 2026-27 cruise season start in Barbados?
The busy season is November to April, the same months the port gave as the reason for building Berth 6. Ships call outside those months too, in smaller numbers.
The winter season tracks the northern winter: European and North American passengers want sun when home is grey, and the hurricane season ends on 30 November. Barbados Port Inc. has not published a call total for 2026-27 as of early October, so the best yardstick is last season, when the port projected 438 cruise calls against 388 the winter before, according to Barbados Today. The government's tourism ministry reported just over 100 calls in January 2026 alone and an estimated 840,000 cruise visitors over the season (tourism.gov.bb).The busiest days are what matter to you. On Sunday 7 December 2025 five ships brought 11,472 passengers, and on Wednesday 21 January 2026 the count passed 12,000. If your ship's schedule shows four or five others in port, book your trip ahead rather than on the quay.

What cruise lines leave from Barbados?
About 19 lines homeport here, from small luxury yachts to big-ship brands: Windstar, Seabourn, Silversea, SeaDream, Oceania, Regent, Explora, AIDA, P&O, Marella, TUI and MSC among them.
In December 2024 Barbados counted 19 homeporting lines, and Cruise Industry News listed most of them: Windstar, Seabourn, Silversea, Sea Cloud, SeaDream, Oceania, Explora Journeys, Regent Seven Seas, Scenic, AIDA, P&O Cruises, Marella, Star Clippers, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, TUI, Swan Hellenic, Crystal and MSC. The mix is the point: small luxury and sailing ships that use Bridgetown to start a week in the Grenadines, next to the big British and German fly-cruise brands. For British passengers the fly-cruise is the usual way in. P&O's winter 2026-27 programme flies guests out on TUI, Norse Atlantic and Virgin Atlantic, and the Virgin flights from Manchester connect with Arvia guests joining in Barbados on a Friday, per Cruise Critic. Luggage goes from plane to ship. That is convenient, and it also means you land, transfer and sail on the same day with no time for a boat trip. If you want one, book a hotel night at the start or the end.
Off the ship and into the water: the beach-day shore excursion picks up at the cruise port, sails out to the turtles and a wreck, and brings you back on a set schedule.
Book thisWhen does Princess start sailing from Bridgetown?
In January 2027. Crown Princess sails seven-night Southern Caribbean round trips from Bridgetown from January to March 2027, and Emerald Princess takes over from November 2027.
Princess announced the new homeport in March 2026. Cruise Industry News reports ten Barbados departures between January 2027 and March 2028, and CruiseMapper gives a sample March 2027 Crown Princess week calling at San Juan, St Thomas, St Maarten, Dominica and Grenada. Bridgetown is paired with San Juan, and passengers can choose which of the two ports to board in. The selling point for Princess is the UK market: direct flights into Barbados rather than a connection through the US.For a boat trip, a Princess homeport day works like any other turnaround. Arriving passengers have the morning before embarkation, departing passengers have the hours between leaving the ship and their flight. Neither is a good fit for a five-hour catamaran. A night at a west-coast hotel either side is. Our shore excursions guide covers the port-day options in more depth.
| Ship | From Bridgetown | Length | Sample ports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crown Princess | January to March 2027 | 7 nights | San Juan, St Thomas, St Maarten, Dominica, Grenada |
| Emerald Princess | November 2027 to March 2028 | 6 to 9 nights | Dominica, Tortola, St Kitts, Antigua |
What is the new Berth 6, and how many cruise ships can dock in Barbados?
Berth 6 is a 315-metre, 13-metre-deep berth north of Berth 5, built for cargo so the older berths stay free for cruise ships. The cruise side takes up to six ships at once.
Barbados Port Inc. formally commissioned Berth 6 at the end of May 2026, as part of an expansion that also added 9.4 acres of container yard (Barbados Today). The chairman, Peter Odle, tied it to cruise tourism as much as trade: moving container ships onto the new quay leaves the traditional berths for cruise ships in the November to April peak. It was already earning its keep before the ceremony. On 7 December 2025, with every traditional berth full, the port put Marella Explorer on Berth 6 and ran its whole turnaround there. What does it mean on the quay? More room for ships, not more room on land. The terminal, which opened in 1994 and houses more than 60 shops and bars (Visit Barbados), is the same building, and the taxi rank and the road into town carry the same traffic. On a five-ship day, give yourself time at the start and the end.
How do you fit a boat trip into a cruise port day?
Pick a trip that knows you have a ship to catch. The beach-day excursion starts at the port; the 90-minute glass-bottom trip fits almost any call; the five-hour catamaran needs a long day.
The port is about a mile from downtown Bridgetown, a 20 to 25 minute walk, and Carlisle Bay is about 2.1 miles away, which most people cover by taxi. Agree the taxi fare before you set off; the cabs have no meters. Cruise passengers arriving and leaving on the same ship need no visa, according to Barbados Immigration, but carry your passport or ship card as the line instructs. The table sets out what each listing says. The beach day and turtle swim is built for this: a shuttle from the cruise port, an 80-minute turtle and wreck trip on the Tranquility, then a lounger at Savvy on the Bay. Pickups run from 8:45 to 11:00 and returns from 2:00 to 4:20 pm, so check your all-aboard time against the return slot. The glass-bottom turtle cruise is shorter still. The classic catamaran boards at the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, Desk/Gate 1, but its pickup is set up for hotels; tell the operator you are on a ship. And skip the submarine on a port day: its listing says it is not suitable for cruise ship guests.
| Trip | Length | Starts from | Port-day fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach day and turtle swim | 6 h | Shuttle from the cruise port | Built for it: set return times |
| Glass-bottom turtle cruise | 1.5 h | Carlisle Bay dock or Savvy on the Bay | Good: short, a taxi ride away |
| Classic catamaran | 5 h | Cruise Terminal Desk/Gate 1 | Long calls; tell the operator you are on a ship |
| Luxury cruise, max 15 | 4 h | Careenage, by the Errol Barrow statue | Long calls; a walk or taxi into town |
| Atlantis submarine | 2 h | Shallow Draught | No: the listing excludes cruise ship guests |

Shuttle from the port, an 80-minute turtle and shipwreck trip, then a reserved lounger and umbrella at Carlisle Bay. Returns run from 2:00 to 4:20 pm.
Book this Tour detailsWhat if your cruise starts or ends in Bridgetown?
Add a night. With a hotel bed on the west coast you can book the sunset sails and the private catamaran, which do not suit a port day.
This is where Barbados beats most cruise ports. A homeporting passenger who flies in a day early can take the five-hour catamaran with hotel pickup, or the steel pan sunset cruise from the Shallow Draught next to the port, without watching the clock. The private catamaran sails on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Holetown or Carlisle Bay and confirms the meeting point on WhatsApp, so match it to your flight days.Do the boat trip the day before you board, not the morning of: an embarkation day has enough moving parts. At the end of a cruise, check your flight time first. A short trip in Carlisle Bay fits around a late flight; a five-hour sail with an open bar before an overnight flight is your call. Our catamaran guide compares the options, and the rainy-season post covers November sailings, when the first winter ships arrive and the wet months end.
A day before your cruise? The classic catamaran collects you from your hotel for a turtle snorkel, a wreck stop and a hot buffet lunch up the west coast.
Book thisFrequently asked questions
How many cruise ships can dock in Barbados at once?
The cruise berths take up to six ships at once. Since late 2025 the new Berth 6, built mainly for cargo, has also taken a cruise ship on the busiest days, as it did for Marella Explorer on 7 December 2025.
Does Princess Cruises sail from Barbados?
From January 2027, yes. Crown Princess sails seven-night Southern Caribbean round trips from Bridgetown from January to March 2027, and Emerald Princess takes over from November 2027 to March 2028.
Do I need a visa to visit Barbados on a cruise?
Barbados Immigration lists passengers arriving and leaving on the same ship as an exception to the visa requirement. Carry your passport anyway, and check your own nationality's rules if your cruise starts or ends in Bridgetown and you fly in or out.
Can I do a catamaran trip on a cruise port day?
Yes, if the call is long enough. The classic catamaran listing runs five hours and boards at the cruise terminal; the beach-day excursion is built around ship times; the glass-bottom trip in Carlisle Bay takes 90 minutes. The submarine listing says it is not suitable for cruise ship guests.
